Happy the Dragon Boat Festival
2021 / 06 / 10
The Dragon Boat Festival, also called Double Fifth Festival, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth moon of the lunar calendar. It is one of the most important Chinese festivals, the other two being the Autumn Moon Festival and Chinese New Year. The origin of this summer festival centers around a scholarly government official named Chu Yuan. He was a good and respected man, but because of the misdeeds of jealous rivals he eventually fell into disfavor in the emperor's court. Unable to regain the respect of the emperor, in his sorrow Chu Yuan threw himself into the Mi Low river. Because of their admiration for Chu Yuan, the local people living adjacent to the Mi Lo River rushed into their boats to search for him while throwing rice into the waters to appease the river dragons. Although they were unable to find Chu Yuan, their efforts are still commemorated today during the Dragon Boat Festival.

China's per people chicken consumption from 0.9 kg in 1978, increased to 10.3 kg in 2008, an increase of 11.4 times. At present, chicken has become the second largest consumer goods, second to pork in China,"she said. She denoted that, Chinese chicken consumption is in the high-speed growth, while, being shared in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and other countries and regions of the world 52 because of the High quality and inexpensive according to the data. US chicken consumption on the rise --Connect Group
2015 / 10 / 30
US - More chickens are crossing the road and on to consumers' plates, according to new research at the National Chicken Council's Chicken Marketing Seminar in Greensboro, Georgia. Overall, the average number of meals or snacks that contained chicken eaten by survey respondents in the two weeks prior to the survey was 6.1. This is up from 5.2, or 17 per cent, from the 2012 findings. Millennial respondents (18-34) remain the most likely to eat chicken meals or snacks frequently (7.7). "With the tight supplies in the cattle and hog herds, and accompanying record beef and pork prices, it's not surprising to see a double digit increase in chicken consumption this year," said National Chicken Council Vice President of Communications Tom Super. "What is surprising to me," Super noted, "is that health and nutrition and taste both topped cost as the reason consumers are turning more to the original white meat." The survey was commissioned by the National Chicken Council and conducted online by PKS Research Partners 29 May – 1 June 2014 among 1,019 adults. In 1998 and 2006 respondents were asked if they are likely to eat more, less or about the same amount of chicken. In 2014 they were asked more specifically about likely changes in chicken consumption from a grocery store and likely change in behavior regarding a food service establishment. The 12 month outlook for the grocery segment looks promising with a net of 24 per cent saying they will be eating more chicken. This is more than three times the proportion previously noted. The primary reasons for eating more chicken from a grocery store are health/nutrition (34 per cent) and taste (32 per cent). These are trailed by cost (17 per cent). Women are somewhat more concerned than men about both health/nutrition and cost.
Can the poultry industry meet everyone's demands?--Connect Group
2015 / 10 / 30
GLOBAL - How should the poultry industry react if consumer demands on one aspect of production leads to predictable adverse effects on some other aspect? This dilemma is faced by US chicken producers following an announcement by school meal providers in several large cities that they will in future only serve chicken that has never received antibiotics. We all want to do the Right Thing, of course, but how should the poultry industry react when ever more challenging demands from consumers will have predictable adverse consequences elsewhere? How do we balance the challenges of feeding a growing global human population with those of consumers who would prefer food to be produced as they believe it was 10, 50 or 100 years ago? A recent example is an announcement from a coalition of school districts in the United States, which has undertaken to raise the standards of the chicken it purchases for school meals "above and beyond the quality of the chicken we normally purchase at local supermarkets". The move, by the Urban School Food Alliance, has the stated aim to show that "school food directors across the country truly care about the health and wellness of students". It is a praiseworthy goal. But dig into the details and one sees that the Alliance is calling for its suppliers to provide chicken reared under the following conditions: no animal by-products in the feed; raised on an all-vegetarian diet; humanely raised as outlined in the National Chicken Council Animal Welfare Guidelines – and no antibiotics ever. The demands of this group cannot easily be overlooked, providing, as it does, almost three million meals daily in cities including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami-Dade, Dallas and Orlando. The poultry industry body, the National Chicken Council (NCC) has responded, saying it shares the goal of providing school children with food that is healthy, safe and affordable. But its spokesperson adds: "We s
Keeping up with poultry market developments --Connect Group
2015 / 10 / 30
GLOBAL - This week's focus is on changing consumer preferences, new research into antibiotic resistance and an update on bird flu in poultry and cases in humans caused by viruses of avian origin. In future, consumers are expected to have a renewed focus on ethical issuesbut this will not be too much at the expense of price. Speaking at the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) Outlook Conference last week, Richard Nicholls from the market analysts, Future Foundation, said that consumers will seek greater transparency when shopping for meat and dairy products. Changing tastes will see consumers across the globe looking for new experiences in their purchases; they will buy meat and dairy products for special and unusual occasions. As for the Asian market, between 2014 and 2020, gross domestic product is forecast to grow at 4.9 per cent year on year, according to Nick Miles of the Institute of Grocery Distribution (IGD). However, the grocery market in Asia is expected to see an 8.5 per cent compound annual growth rate, he said. This compares to between two and four per cent for the EU. Mr Miles said that Asia has now overtaken the US in terms of economic output and the grocery market is expected to benefit further from this growth. Asia's growing middle class is becoming a major target for meat and dairy exporters, he added. Three European supermarket groups have been given top marks in an annual global farm animal welfare report published last week. Full marks were awarded to Marks & Spencer, Waitrose and Coop Group (Switzerland). Now in its third year, the Business Benchmark on Farm Animal Welfare (BBFAW) provides an annual review of how the world's leading food companies are managing and reporting their farm animal welfare practices. According to new research from UK scientists, rivers and streams could be a major source of antibiotic resistance in the environment. Researchers at the
